The Wildlife Health Center (WHC) is a self-supporting unit within the School of Veterinary Medicine dedicated to balancing the needs of people, wildlife and the environment. It administers high-profile wildlife/conservation programs and, on an ongoing basis, responds to emerging wildlife health/conservation issues and current wildlife research concerns. The OWCN (www.owcn.org) is a legislatively mandated program that strives to ensure that wildlife exposed to petroleum products in the environment receive the best achievable treatment by ensuring access to facilities, trained staff, and volunteers maintained in a constant state of readiness in California.
General Responsibilities:
Coordinate wildlife field operations during oil spill response. Engage in research activities to ensure ’best achievable treatment’ of oiled wildlife and to enhance our knowledge of the biology and ecology of wildlife at risk of oil exposure, assist with teaching and public service activities and oversee the possible use of volunteers in the field for search and collection activities.
Specific Duties:
- Wildlife Field Operations During Oil Spill Response: Provide essential oversight and management of oiled wildlife field operations (recovery and transportation of oiled wildlife to stabilization and/or primary care facilities) during oil spill response. Act as the lead OWCN representative managing multiple field teams during emergency responses. Responsibilities will include: Arriving at the spill location within 12 hours of being notified to respond; providing direction and oversight of the wildlife response operation as it relates to field activities, supervision of all personnel and volunteers engaged in search and collection of oiled wildlife; making decisions and recommendations regarding wildlife recovery and staffing needs. Ensure that teams and/or volunteers wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when collecting contaminated wildlife. Comply with policy and procedure regarding the correct disposal of hazardous waste at the stabilization site. With the OWCN Volunteer Coordinator, ensure that volunteers know and adhere to the Volunteer Guidance Manual and that volunteers act within the Incident Command Structure. Must be able to work within the Incident Command System. Interacts and liaisons with a diverse group of individuals and agencies including the Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, US Geological Survey, National Park Service, State Parks, local governments and law enforcement, the responsible party, wildlife rehabilitation organizations, and volunteers. Manage all OWCN field equipment during spills. Provide daily wildlife recovery summaries which include daily cost accounting. Prepare a wildlife recovery report for the OWCN Director immediately following the conclusion of the oil spill response.
- Spill Response Preparedness: During non-spill periods, develop and exercise the OWCN’s recovery and transportation capacity and readiness. Work with OWCN response staff to develop comprehensive capture plans for all species and regions of California at risk for spills. Write essential guidance documents for wildlife professionals and management agency personnel involved with oil spill response that detail safe and effective capture techniques. Identify appropriate personnel to staff capture and transport positions during spill events. Acquire and maintain field equipment and supplies and identify and implement improvements to existing field methods. Participate in response drills and exercises with industry and agency partners to test current plans. Oversee OWCN field operations training for staff and volunteers, which includes, development and updating the curriculum and provision of appropriate health and safety training. Provide leadership for field activities training sessions, including coordination of instructors, venues and teaching materials. Travel to various locations to convene and/or participate in training sessions. Actively identify and recruit appropriate and interested wildlife professional organizations that could play a critical role in the field operations of the OWCN during oil spill response. This may include coordinating and leading regional meetings throughout California to enlist new participants and attending regional scientific and environmental meetings to represent the OWCN. Provide direction for the field applications to the volunteer program to ensure that an appropriate number of OWCN participant organization staff and volunteers are trained to respond during a spill event.
- Research: Perform collaborative and independent research that informs best achievable oiled wildlife response in California. In conjunction with the OWCN Program Director, help design and conduct post-release monitoring studies of wildlife rehabilitated during spill response. Develop and test strategies for increasing the efficiency of oiled wildlife field activities. Make recommendations for ongoing research to address the needs of wildlife affected by petroleum products. Help conduct field capture activities on an as-needed basis for other OWCN/WHC researchers. Engage in collaborative and independent service-directed applied research.
- Outreach: Develop outreach materials on oil spill /disaster preparedness, emergency response management, and wildlife field techniques. This program should include the development of educational materials about oil spills and chemical pollution of the marine environment and highlight practical applications of OWCN supported response and research. Represent the Wildlife Health Center and Oiled Wildlife Care Network at various local, national and international meetings. Serve as liaison with wildlife professionals, the scientific community, the general public and numerous state and federal agencies including personal and telephone consultations, lectures, workshops and seminars on wildlife methodology and research.

Duties:
- Volunteer Coordination/Management Plan, develop, organize, direct, andconduct volunteer coordination for the Oiled Wildlife Care Network. During emergency spill response, act as an interface between the OSPR volunteer coordinator, OWCN staff and rehabilitation volunteers. Maintain constant contact with OWCN Director, Response Veterinarian and senior rehabilitation staff to evaluate the need for volunteers within each spill response area. Supervise and facilitate volunteer processing, ensuring that volunteers are comfortable with, and capable at job assignments. In conjunction with OSPR Volunteer Coordinator, provide volunteer stewardship and conduct (or organize) volunteer orientation and trainings. Coordinate with the OSPR volunteer coordinator and the Joint Information Center the need to broadcast for volunteers via the appropriate media source. Immediately after each spill, conduct a post-spill review evaluating numbers and demographics from volunteers called on during the event, and make recommendations with regard to changes needed. Summarize and ensure that volunteers receive appreciation certificates and thank you letters. Other duties will include: developing OWCN-sponsored volunteer appreciation activities, (e.g. guest lectures, sponsored outings, etc.), making presentations and representing the OWCN at meetings to market the volunteer program, and to maintain current contact information (database) of OWCN volunteers statewide.
- Outreach Coordination/Management Coordinate and maintain public outreach information and materials for the Oiled Wildlife Care Network during and between spill events. Specific duties may include: making presentations and representing the OWCN at meetings and events; working with OWCN staff to maintain accurate and useful information on the OWCN website; helping to produce OWCN promotional and informational documents (such as newsletters, protocols, and industry information); development and maintenance of an oil spill blog during events to inform the public of OWCN-related activities; identify and pursue educational opportunities for K-12 schools to instruct children of the effects of oil on wildlife (which may be developed as written materials, videos, internet files and/or interactive computer programs); and helping to develop and manage the OWCN’s Media Plan to allow for clear and efficient media information to be conveyed during oil spills.
- Oil Spill Training During non-spill periods, participate in the coordination of OWCN staff and volunteer training classes offered statewide each year and additional courses (on an as-needed basis) outside of California. As a member of the OWCN spill response team, develop/update training materials and OWCN manuals for field staff and volunteer activities during spill response, including: incident command structure, health and safety concerns, public health issues, media etiquette, capture and transport techniques, and job responsibilities. Develop and conduct (in conjunction with the OSPR’s Volunteer Coordinator) specific trainings for OWCN Participant organization’s volunteer coordinators to ensure their integration into a Volunteer Operations Center during spill responses.
- Other Spill Response Duties As a member of the response team, assist OWCN staff with logistical and organizational activities of the Network between and during spills. Duties may include: helping in the procurement and disposition of supplies, ensuring the receipt and completeness of appropriate paperwork (animal and personnel records), entering and proofing data in records/database, assisting in the collation and storage of records, and coordination with OWCN Participants to ensure inter- and intra-spill issues are addressed quickly. PHS/SPCA.

- Provide humane care and treatment for all sheltered animals.
- Clean and disinfect all animal areas as necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
- Correctly identify incoming animals to ensure proper food, housing and medical care.

Position Description:
WCA is a non-profit, volunteer based wildlife rehabilitation group located in Sacramento and serving Sacramento, Yolo, and surrounding counties. Each year, our group receives 5-7,000 wild animals and releases them back into the wild, giving them a second chance at life. WCA is in the process over winter 2007-8 of moving into our long-awaited new 4000 sq ft facility on 2 acres.
Intern will gain practical, hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation, which will enhance their ability to gain employment in wildlife rehabilitation or allow them to gain additional experience for veterinary school. Some of the skills learned include species identification, proper husbandry techniques, wild animal handling, medical exams/triage, administration of medication, and other procedures. The intern will also be exposed to the rules, regulations, and ethics governing wildlife rehabilitation, the issues surrounding the use of volunteers in non-profit organizations, and the day-to-day details of running a wildlife center. The intern will primarily work hands-on with songbirds and waterbirds in a facility that admitted 4000 wild birds and mammals in the 2007 season.
Qualifications:

Position description:
Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of regional wildlife, with an emphasis on avian species and Harbour Seal pups. IWNCC is located in the Pacific Northwest, on Salt Spring Island, one of the largest of the Canadian Gulf Islands. We are a small, but very busy centre, primarily outdoors on a forested 4-acre property. We treat about 500 avian and small terrestrial animals and up to 100 seal pups each year. Seasonal work hours are long and the work is fast-paced and physically demanding, however with the cross-discipline of avian, land and marine mammals, it is varied and fulfilling.
For the 10th year, IWNCC will be offering summer internships. There will be 14 staggered internships awarded this summer between May and October, each lasting 8 to 12 weeks. The internships are on a voluntary basis, however comfortable housing and a food stipend are provided. Interns are accepted internationally and are responsible for their own transportation to and from British Columbia.
Interns will work directly under marine mammal and avian rehabilitation specialists and can expect to learn the following:
- Safe rescue and handling of wild species.
- Proper restraint techniques.
- Stabilizing critical patients and new arrivals.
- Food preparation through all stages of the rehabilitation process.
- Gavage (tube) feeding, force feeding and hand feeding techniques.
- Proper hygiene and isolation protocols to prevent the spread of disease.
- Administration of oral medications.
- Behavioral and medical observation and proper record keeping.
- Natural history of marine mammal and avian species.
- Fundamentals of how, why and when to administer alternative remedies such as homeopathy and Chinese herbs.
- Response to the rescue hotline and public interface as well as the logistics of coordinating rescues from many remote locations.

Position Description:
Interns learn all aspects of rehabilitation from capture, initial assessment, and medical treatment to nutrition, bird washing and staff management. Aquatic birds are challenging and labor intensive to rehabilitate. Interns learn first hand the intricacies of waterproofing, housing for each species, problem solving and learn health management (caring for many birds at one time). All of these points are important aspects of oil spill response and oiled bird rehabilitation.
Interns that finish their internship can be evaluated to become members of the
IFAW/IBRRC Oil Spill Response Team and help respond to oil spills on an international basis.
Qualifications:

- Daily care and maintenance of the sea bird exhibit and
rehabilitation areas including cleaning, pruning, raking, laundry etc.
- Oversight and coordination of animals and staff during seasonal
periods when there can be a high influx of birds.
- Daily record keeping, maintain the files for the department
including all animal records.
- Maintain database on seabirds and prepare annual reports to various
government agencies. Supervise staff to ensure proper record keeping
needed for annual reports.
- Prepare reports necessary required by seabird rehabilitation permits
as required.
- Provide updates to US Fish and wildlife. Includes: animal
transports, deaths, etc.
- Observe and report trends of unusual injuries or mortalities to
veterinary staff and/or USFWS.
- Give daily scheduled lectures to the public pertaining to Sea Birds
in Hawaii.
- Maintenance of department supplies and equipment.
- Maintain inventory of the Park's collection of Sea Birds.
- Generate daily report to the veterinarian.
- Generate/Update protocols for the sea bird collection for review by
the veterinary team.
- Train staff and interns in basic bird handling and husbandry skills.
- Respond to informational calls from the public.
- Additional duties as needed by the General Manager or Veterinarian.
Working Conditions: Indoor/Outdoors in sea bird rehabilitation
or sea bird sanctuary enclosures.
Work Hours: Flexible. (Must be able to work weekends and
holidays as required.)
Normal Schedules: Flexible Full Time. Work schedule consists of
a minimum of 40 hours per week.
Mental and Physical Demands: Duties require dependability,
accuracy, and the use of judgment, problem solving, organization, working
under direction of the Veterinarian and flexibility to adjust to changes
in the population of birds. Demands attention to several items at one time
with many distractions and interruptions. Requires establishing and
maintaining cooperative and productive work relationships and relate to
guests, volunteers, and colleagues in a friendly and professional manner.
Communication Demands: Requires communicating effectively both
orally and written and the ability to follow oral and written instructions
and directives.
Qualification Requirements:
Skills/Knowledge: Meet the mental, physical, and communication
demands listed above. Prefer a candidate with experience in bird handling,
hydration, restraint, and basic knowledge and skill pertaining to bird
husbandry.
Education/Experience: Graduation from high school and/or has
completed course work in animal training and husbandry. Prior experience
with birds strongly preferred. Will consider any candidate who can
demonstrate a combination of education and experience that would provide
the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to meet the minimum
qualifications to perform the essential functions of this position.
Salary Grade and Range: Starting pay at $25,000-31,000/YR (based
on prior bird handling experience)
