January quail

Dear Wildlife Rehabilitator,

turkey vulture

Happy New Year!

January is a great time of year to recruit and engage new volunteers and re-energize your loyal ones. There are a number of conferences and classes coming up this spring we think you and your volunteers would enjoy. We invite you to share your classes with other organizations by posting them on the CCWR website.

Fresh new start for 2010

Now is the time to clean out that storeroom, freezer and file cabinet, and update your protocols and recruiting materials. Please take a moment to look at any postings you have placed on our CCWR website for classes, events, jobs, volunteers and animal placements from last year. Let us know if your listing has been filled, or your animal placed. Use the forms provided on the web pages to post new ones for 2010!

Nicole Carion, California Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Rehabilitation Coordinator, reminds us that our 2009 Annual Year End Reports are due on January 31, 2010, along with a current volunteer list and confirmation that you and your volunteers have completed your two-hour Continuing Education credits. If you do not have volunteers or you do not rehabilitate birds, please include that information.

  • List of current volunteers
  • Copy of Federal (USFWS) “Annual End of Year Report” for birds
  • Confirmation that all volunteers have taken two hours of Continuing Education

Wildlife in the News

Wildlife issues are hitting the front-page news frequently now, and often those of us interested in wildlife diseases are the first to know about larger issues that affect the public. CCWR members share information that can affect all of us as well as the animals we treat. Look for updated news on our website and join our Rehabilitation Discussion Group to participate via email.

CDF&G Biologists Killed in Helicopter Crash

On January 5, three California Department of Fish and Game scientists were killed when their helicopter clipped a power line and crashed in a mountainous area of eastern Madera County.

Killed were associate biologist Clu Cotter, 40, biologist supervisor Kevin O'Connor, 48, and seasonal aide Tom Stolberg, 31, according to the Department of Fish and Game. The three, all of whom were from Fresno, were conducting an aerial deer survey. The helicopter pilot also lost his life.

With respect and recognition of these fellow wildlife professionals who lost their lives, we extend our condolences and deepest sympathy to their families.
