Pismo Beach

Dear Wildlife Rehabilitator,

Pismo Beach

The CCWR board of directors had their second meeting of the year on May 2, and finalized the plans for our 15th Annual Symposium to be held in Pismo Beach this November. It is going to be fabulous! You asked for wet labs and we've added them -- at the unbelieveable price of just $10 each for symposium registrants! Two veterinarians will be there to facilitate and answer questions. Mark your calendar for November 20-22 and go to our Schedule of Events to read the list of exciting topics we're planning.

That's the good news. Bad news is we've lost our wonderful layout artist, Sandy Ozuna, who has volunteered her time and talent to CCWR for more than five years. We are eternally grateful for all her hard work and will miss her. Now CCWR needs to find another designer. If you are a graphic designer, or know of one who might like to help provide timely information to our members, we'd like to hear from you.

We're looking for someone to donate 20-30 hours of their talent three times a year to help us prepare our 8-page newsletter. Check out the Volunteer job description on our website or email Leslie Bale.

Survey

Thank you for everything you do for wildlife!

Survey results are in!

More than 30% of you responded! That's a wonderful response that shows how committed you are to our work and the organization. Over half of you said you were receiving our emails. You asked for regular updates on new studies, animal care and caging ideas, and of course information on all the common (and uncommon!) species we see in rehabilitation. You gave us dozens of great ideas for future symposiums, classes, events and articles. Thank you!!!

Most of you told us you use our website and find it useful, but better than half of you didn't know about the Yahoo group, or couldn't find it.

Most respondents had attended at least one of our symposiums and would like to see it moved around, with a preference for a central location that is easy to get to. Everyone seems to want lower room rates. (What a surprise!) You asked for more networking opportunities, more vendors, more information about other centers, more hands-on labs and roundtables. You asked for More, More, More, and we're on it!

Show us your stuff!

We're making Saturday night at Pismo about YOU this year!

  • Photos! Francie Waller is collecting photos of the work you do and will be putting together a slide show. We know you've all got great photos of your special patients. Share them with us and we'll add them to the slide show on Saturday evening.
  • Auction items! It's all about recycling this year! Do you have some good quality, new or like-new usable rehabilitation items you don't need, which someone else can put to good use? Some wildlife-related art or jewelry that is just too good for craigsList? The Saturday evening Silent Auction we hold at each Symposium is a fun way to support CCWR while. The money generated by the purchases helps keep your membership costs low, and funds scholarships for rehabilitators who need them. Contact Shawnie Williams for more guidelines about what we can use.
  • Housing ideas and solutions! We'll be setting up a display area where you can share examples, photos and plans for the unique creations you've discovered or built that make your work easier. Incubators, nest boxes, hammocks, critter-keepers, whatever! Bring a sample if it's small; if not, bring photos or plans. If you have questions, contact Sharron Baird.

We have begun posting relevant wildlife news on our website as it is published. Current stories include updates on California Condors, domoic acid toxicity in Southern California marine mammals, CDF&G reports on E. coli, and a new report on the impact of overgrazing on western wildlife. These stories change daily, so check the site for more.
